Program Description

The English Education, B.S. prepares graduates to teach English in grades 6–12 in Utah public and private schools. Students gain essential pedagogical skills and subject-area expertise to effectively teach literature, writing, and language arts. The program emphasizes the integration of theory and practice through coursework in reading, writing, speaking/listening, and language instruction aligned with Utah State Core strands.

Matriculation Requirements

1. ENGL and MATH QL courses must have a grade C or higher.
2. GPA of 3.0 or higher with no grade lower than a C in content area courses.
3. Completion of all General Education requirements and 70% of content area courses.
4. Pass LiveScan Criminal Background Check.

ENGL 4240 Grammar and Unit Design in the English Classroom is substituted for EDSC 4440 Content Area Literacies

Graduation Requirements

1. Completion of a minimum of 120 semester credits.
2. Overall GPA of 3.0 (B) or above with no grade lower than a C in major required content courses and no grade lower than a B- in Licensure and Methods courses.
3. Residency hours -- minimum of 30 credit hours through course attendance at UVU, with at least 10 hours earned in the last 45 hours.
4. Completion of GE and specified departmental requirements.
5. Successful completion of at least one Global/Intercultural course.
6. Successful completion of at least two Writing Enriched (WE) courses.

Program Learning Outcomes

1. Construct standards-based lesson plans that demonstrate alignment with learning objectives, Utah Core strands (reading, writing, speaking/listening, and language), and the developmental needs of diverse learners.
2. Implement instructional strategies that differentiate content, process, and product to support diverse student learning styles, abilities, cultural backgrounds, and English language proficiency.
3. Apply content knowledge of literary and informational texts, including genre, structure, historical context, and rhetorical strategies, to plan and deliver engaging instruction.
4. Create a positive, respectful classroom climate that promotes active engagement, student voice, and collaborative learning through effective classroom management techniques.
5. Utilize formative and summative assessment data to monitor student progress, guide instructional decisions, and provide feedback that promotes literacy development.
