Program Description

The Writing for Entertainment Media, Minor prepares students to write professionally for film, television, and digital media. Through coursework in scriptwriting, film analysis, and story editing, students develop skills in script formatting, visual storytelling, character development, and audience engagement. Students also gain insight into the business and economic aspects of media writing, making this minor an ideal complement to majors in film, communication, theatre, and related fields. This minor includes the creation of a complete long-form script, providing a strong portfolio piece for entry into the entertainment industry.

Program Learning Outcomes

1. Apply technical knowledge of script formatting, writing for camera and audio, and production requirements to create scripts suitable for professional media production.
2. Analyze storytelling principles such as structure, character development, and audience engagement by evaluating a variety of film production styles and narrative forms.
3. Evaluate scripts by identifying storytelling strengths and challenges, offering constructive feedback to peers, and revising one’s own work using industry-standard editing techniques.
4. Produce a complete, long-form media script (minimum of 45 minutes) that reflects professional standards in storytelling, formatting, and narrative development.
5. Describe the business and economic considerations of professional media writing, including industry practices, market demands, and career pathways.
