Sociology is the scientific study of society which examines the social context in which the individuals live, including cultures, social structures, and social institutions. Sociology is a relatively young discipline that describes, explains, and predicts social interactions and institutions using theoretical as well as social scientific methods of inquiry. According to the American Sociological Association, the essential concepts that students will learn within sociology are social construction of everyday life and sociological imagination; social structure; socialization; social stratification, and social change. Students will also gain competencies in critical and theoretical thinking and application of social scientific methodology towards rigorous data analysis.
