Program Description

The Healthcare Interpreting Spanish-English, Certificate of Proficiency provides students an opportunity to prove their proficiency in Spanish medical terminology and an ability to work as a qualified healthcare interpreter in the Spanish-English language pair. Provides students with knowledge of important aspects of the interpreting profession, such as interpreting modalities, best practices, ethics, professional qualifications, and strategies for effective communication facilitation.

Graduation Requirements

1. Completion of 12 upper-division credit hours.
2. Residency hours — minimum of 4 credit hours through course attendance at UVU.
3. Any grade below a "C" (2.0) in a certificate course will not be accepted.

Program Learning Outcomes

1. Interpret dialogues between Spanish-speaking patients and English-speaking healthcare providers in an accurate and effective way.
2. Apply ethically motivated strategies for dialogue interpreting, including facilitating a communicative event between participants of different cultures and expectations.
3. Correctly use advanced medical terminology in English and Spanish.
4. Assess how government regulations or other policies impact limited-English proficient persons' interactions with the healthcare system.
5. Build personal training/education routines to maintain interpreting skills throughout career.
