Program Description

The Latin American Studies, Minor provides an interdisciplinary foundation in the histories, cultures, and global connections of Latin America and U.S. Latino communities. Students examine key events from the Pre-Columbian era to the present and analyze the social, political, and geographic relationships shaping the region and its diasporas. The minor also develops intermediate proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese, thereby preparing students with cultural insight and language skills valuable across a range of professional and global contexts.

Program Learning Outcomes

1. Interpret Latin American and US Latino literature, culture, history, practices, and perspectives.
2. Explain key events in US Latino and Latin American history that shaped its development since the Pre-Columbian era.
3. Analyze the relationship of Latino people in the US and Latin American countries, their geography, society, and interaction with global and political systems.
4. Communicate in Spanish and/or Portuguese in speaking, listening, reading, and writing at the ACTFL Intermediate Mid level.
